Cappella Sonora

Cappella Sonora is pleased to announce the release of our debut CD, Josquin on the Desert, featuring the sacred and secular music of Josquindes Prez.

The centerpiece of the disc is the late period canonic masterpiece Missa sine nomine, which the group sings with authentic 16th century Franco-Flemish Latin. The disc also includes some of Josquin's most well-known works like the motet Ave Maria, gratia plena, the gorgeous musical eulogy to Johannes Okeghem, Nimphes des bois, the haunting chanson Mille regretz, and the popular frottola El grillo. We've crafted unique "arrangements" of many of the secular pieces, complemented with period instruments like the lute, harp, recorders, and percussion.

Gloria

Gloria in excelsis Deo et in terra pax hominibus bonae voluntatis. Laudamus Te. Benedicimus Te. Adoramus Te. Glorificamus Te. Gratias agimus tibi propter magnam gloriam tuaam. Domine Deus, Rex caelestis, Dues Pater omnipotens. Domine Fili unigenite Iesu Christe. Domine Deus, Agnus Dei, Filius Patris. Qui tollis peccata mundi, Miserere nobis. Qui tollis peccata mundi, suscipe deprecationem nostram. Qui sedes ad dexteram Patris, miserere nobis. Quoniam tu solus Sanctus, tu solus Dominus, tu solus Altisimus, Iesu Christe. Cum Sancto Spiritu in Gloria Dei, Patris. Amen.

Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise You. We bless You. We worship You. We glorify You. Lord God, heavenly King, God the Father almighty. Lord Jesus Christ, the Only-begotten Son. Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father. You who take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.. You who take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer. You who sit at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For You alone are holy. You alone are Lord. You alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the Glory of God the Father. Amen.

Confiteor unam baptisma in remisionem peccatorum. Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum. Et vitam venture saeculi. Amen.

I believe in one God, The Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible. And in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the Only-begotten Son of God. Born of the Father before all ages. God of God, Light of Light, true God of true God. Begotten, not made, of one substance with the Father. By whom all things were made. Who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven. And became incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the Virgin Mary: AND WAS MADE MAN. He was also crucified for us, suffered under Pontius Pilate, and was buried. And on the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and His kingdom will have no end. And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and Giver of life, Who proceeds from the Father and the Son. Who together with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, and who spoke through the prophets. And one holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I await the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Sanctus

Pleni sunt caeli et terra, Gloria tua. Osanna in excelsis.

Heaven and earth are filled with your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
Blessed is He Who comes in the Name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest

Agnus Dei

Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, miserere nobis.
Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem.

Lamb of God, Who take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, Who take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, Who take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Ave Maria, gratia plena

Ave Maria, gratia plena, dominus tecum, virgo serena ave cuius conceptio solemni plena gaudio,
Caelestia, terrestria nova replet laetitia. Ave, cuius nativitas, nostra fuit solemnitas:
Ut lucifer lux oriens, Verum solem praeveniens. Ave, pia humilitas, sine viro fecunditas, cuius annunciatio
Nostra fuit salvatio.
Ave, vera virginitas,
Immaculata castitas, cuius purificatio nostra fuit purgatio.
Ave, praeclara omnibus, angelicis, virtutibus, cuius fuit assumptio nostra glorificatio.
O Mater Dei, memento mei. Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord be with thee, o serene virgin.
Hail to thee, whose coneption, filled with solemn joy, the heavens and the earth
Are filled with new happiness. Hail to thee, whose nativity was our celebration,
As the morning star in the east precedes the true sun. Hail to the true humility,
Fecundity without the seed of man, whose annunciation was our redemption.
Hail to the true virginity, the spotless chastity, whose purification was our atonement.
Hail to thee who shinest over all angelic virtues, whose assumption was our glorification.
O Mother of God, remember me. Amen.

Vray trésorier de musique et chief d’ouevre, doct, élégant de corps et non point trappé;
Requiescant in pace. Amen.

Requiem aeternam dona eis, domine: et lux perpetua luceat eis. Requiescant in pace. Amen.

Nymphs of the woods, goddesses of the fountains, skilled singers of all nations,
Change your voices so clear and proud to sharp cries and lamentations.
For Atropos, most terrible satrap, has caught your Okeghem in her trap,
True treasurer of music and chef d’ouevre, learned, handsome in appearance, and not stout.
Great pity is that earth should cover him.
Clothe yourselves in mourning, Josquin, Piersson, Brumel, Compére,
And weep great tears from your eyes, for you have lost your good father.
May they rest in peace, Amen.

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord: and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May they rest in peace, Amen.

La dame du chasteau est au creneau venue;

A man who loves fair ladies will often find new loves.
The other day I rode on the high road to Paris
Upon my black horse who prances through the streets.
A man who loves fair ladies will often find new loves.

His four shoes kicked up the dust.
The lady of the castle came to the window:
“Who is that rogue who does not even greet me?”
A man who loves fair ladies will often find new loves.

“Such a rogue as I may be, I have held you in my arms
And have hung my belt above your bed
And my sharp-pointed sword at your bedside.”
A man who loves fair ladies will often find new loves.

Scaramella

Scaramella goes to war with lance and shield.
I’ll dance to that, jumpity-jump, I’ll stomp on that, stompity-stomp.

Scaramella plays the dandy with shoe and boot.
I’ll dance to that, jumpity-jump, I’ll stomp on that, stompity-stomp.

J'ay si grand dueil et paine douloureeuse qu'on me verra brief mes jour deffiner.

It is with great regret that I leave you and lose sight of your loving face;
I suffer such grief and pain that you will see my days are numbered.

Faute d’argent

Lack of money, it is sadness without equal
If I say so, alas! I know well why:
Without any cash it is necessary to keep quiet,
The woman who sleeps for money one awakens.

dale, beve grillo, canta!

The cricket is a good singer who holds a long note.
Go ahead, drink cricket and sing.

But he is not like the other birds, who sing a little
and then go elsewhere. The cricket always stands firm.

When it is hottest he sings alone for love.

Adieu mes amours

Rondeau (voice 1)
Adieu mes amours on m’attent.
Me faire avancer du content.

Goodbye my love, I am expected elsewhere, my purse swells not, neither does it stretch.
And in short, I am broke, until it shall please the king to advance me some wherewithal.

Bergerette (voices 2, 3, 4)

Farewell my love, may god be with you, I say farewell to you until the spring.
I am all concerned as to how I shall live, the reason for this I will tell you now:
I have no more money, should I live of air if the king’s money does not arrive soon?
